Half-way Home for female patients in Gwalior Mansik Arogyashala inaugurated
The Chairperson, Justice J.S. Verma, on 2 November 2001, inaugurated the Half-way Home for female patients and laid the foundation stone of the new OPD Building of the Gwalior Mansik Arogyashala. On the occasion, he underlined the need for a shift from custodial care to therapeutic care for mentally ill persons, as required by the Mental Health Act, 1987. Stressing the need to uphold the dignity of mentally ill persons, he called for greater involvement of NGOs and society. As far as the Commission is concerned, he stated that its role was to act as a catalyst and to facilitate the role of various agencies. He expressed the hope that the autonomous character of the Institute would be maintained in the future and that the Institute would become a model for other institutions.
Earlier, the Chairperson had inspected the various wings of the Mansik Arogyashala. He also reviewed the compliance of the Commission’s directions regarding the functioning of the institute at a meeting with senior officials of the State Government.
