Justice V.S. Malimath retires from the Commission

Justice V.S. Malimath, who joined the Commission on 14 September 1994, retired on 11 June 1999. The Chairperson and Members, officers and staff of the Commission gave him a fond farewell on 10 June 1999.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson said that Justice Malimath reflected the philosophy of human rights. It was this philosophy that needed to be inculcated in the working of the Commission.

He praised Justice Malimath for his deep concern for those whose human rights have been violated in this country, and called Justice Malimath a perfectionist in whatever work he undertook. He said that his retirement would be a loss for the NHRC but that he would continue to guide the Commission as a "Friend of NHRC". He said that the Commission owes the deepest sense of gratitude to Justice V.S. Malimath.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Malimath reminisced about his tenure in the Commission, stating that working for the cause of human rights had given him an immense sense of satisfaction.

Prominent non-governmental organisations that had worked in close collaboration with Justice Malimath held a farewell function in the Commission on 8 June 1999. On that occasion, Justice Malimath said that NGOs were the eyes and ears of the Commission and played an important role as facilitators. But for the NGOs, the Commission would not be able to discharge its duties effectively as the NGOs keep a constant watch on the efforts of the NHRC, encourage or criticizing it in its endeavours to promote and protect human rights.
