Meeting with FAO representatives

The Commission organized a meeting on May 6, 2008 to discuss the Food and Agriculture Organization's initiative to prepare a Guide on Legislating for Right to Food. The meeting chaired by Justice Shri G.P. Mathur, Member NHRC, was attended by the FAO representatives, and Members of NHRC Core Group on Right to Food. Ms Vidar Margret, Ms. Dubravka Bojic Bultrini and Ms Renuka Taimni represented the FAO. Secretary General Shri A.K. Jain; Joint Secretary (P&A), Smt. Aruna Sharma and Director (Admn.) Dr. Sanjay Dubey represented the Commission. Dr. Amrita Rangasami; Dr. Mangala Rai; Shri. K.R. Venugopal who are Members of NHRC Core Group on Right to Food took part in the meeting.
The FAO is preparing a Guide on Legislating for the Right to Food, which aims to provide national law and policy-makers with practical information and guidance for developing or strengthening national legal (and institutional) framework on the Right to food, consistent with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and other pertinent norms of international law. They have held conferences in Africa and South America on the issue and made a draft guide.
Various issues on Food Security including the guidelines prepared by FAO on Legislating Right to Food were discussed in the meeting.
