National Committee for Legal Services-India delegation visits NHRC<br>



The National Committee for Legal Services-India Chairperson, Mr. Justice D.K. Basu led a delegation of 25 persons on a visit to the Commission on the 22nd October, 2011. The delegates included, among others, senior public interest lawyers and legal researchers from different Chinese law firms and academic institutions and universities. Addressing them, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC gave an insight into the jurisdiction, functioning and activities of the Commission which is broad based on the constitutional guarantees provided to all the citizens. He also referred to the various international covenants on human rights to which India is a signatory.
Mr. J.S. Kochher, Joint Secretary (Training), NHRC gave a power-point presentation on the Commission's structure and functioning. The delegation was also very briefly addressed by Dr. Sanjay Dubey, Director (Admn.) on the issue of Bonded Labour and the related laws to stop this practice.
Justice D.K. Basu highlighted the role played by the NHRC in protection and promotion of human rights in the country. The members of Chinese delegation said that the concept of protection and promotion of human rights in their country is yet to take a shape as it is India. They described interaction with the NHRC, India as very informative and useful. The NHRC Members and senior officers also participated in the interactive session.
