National seminar on "Education, Society and Human Rights"<br>



The National Human Rights Commission and Tezpur Central University, Assam jointly organized a two-day 'National seminar on Education, Society and Human Rights' in Hindi at the University Campus from the 12th -13th March, 2012. This was the fifth seminar organized as part of a series of national seminars in Hindi in different parts of the ountry by the NHRC which were aimed at spreading awareness about human rights and generating debate on their importance.
Inaugurating the seminar, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC emphasized the need for an informed and alert society so as to ensure that human rights violations are reported to the appropriate authorities for action against the guilty. The seminar was attended, among others, by probationer IPS and state police service officers, academicians and students of different law colleges.
Mr. Justice Aftab H. Saikia, Chairperson, Assam State Human Rights Commission, stated that the law enforcement agencies must be unbiased and sensitive towards the legitimate concerns of common people, particularly those belonging to the poorer sections of the society, as they are the worst sufferers of human rights violations.
Prominent speakers included, among others, Prof. Mihir Kanti Chaudhury, Vice-Chancellor, Tezpur Central University, Prof. Indra Nath Chaudhury, litterateur and academician, Mr. Ramchandra Khan, former DGP, Bihar, Mrs Veena Upadhyay, former Secretary, Department of Official Language, Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Dr. Subash Sharma, noted writer and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Prof. Suresh Nirav, academician.
Mr. J.P. Meena, Joint Secretary (P&A), NHRC, Dr. S.K. Shukla, Assistant Director (Official Language) also addressed the seminar. Mr. Jaimini Kumar Srivastava, Information & Public Relations Officer, NHRC anchored and moderated different sessions during the seminar.
