The West Bengal State Human Rights Commission has held the West Bengal State Electricity Board responsible for the death by electrocution of Hiden Murmu and his buffalo.
Murmu, a resident of Village Trikul in Dakshin Dinajpur District died after coming in contact with a live electric wire on 19 July 2002 when he was ploughing his land.
The State Commission observed that though the wire had been hanging in a low position on account of illegal hooking at the behest of the local people yet it is the duty of the State Electricity Board to be alert and prevent such illegal hooking/tapping.
It has recommended the State Government for payment of monetary compensation of Rs.20,000/- on account of death of Hiden Murmu and Rs.5,000/- for the death of the buffalo.
