NHRC issues notice to the Tamil Nadu Government on Sivakasi fire incident




New Delhi, September 7th, 2012

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu calling for a report within four weeks into the allegations that at least 30 persons died and more than 50 persons got injury in an explosion in a fireworks factory in Sivakasi on the 5th September, 2012.

The Commission registered this case on the basis of a media report forwarded by an NGO representative, Mr. Anup Kumar Srivastava. Another complaint was sent by human rights activist, Mr. R.H. Bansal wherein he alleged that 54 persons died in the said incident.

Reportedly, about 90% fireworks of the country are made in Sivakasi but no adequate safety measures have been ensured by the government. The complainants have requested a detailed enquiry in the matter and adequate compensation to the victims and families of the deceased.
