NHRC notices to DM and SP, Gautam Budh Nagar, U.P. over suicide by a girl after alleged police inaction over complaint of her harassment

New Delhi, 12th November, 2015

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 17 year old girl committed suicide in Chijarsi, NOIDA, District Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh on the 16th October, 2015 after she was repeatedly harassed by three men who had also tried to kidnap her and the police did not arrest the accused even after a complaint was filed.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Accordingly notices have been issued to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh calling for reports in the matter within two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on the 17th October, 2015 the girl had earlier written a note wishing to end her life. When the family came to know about it, they had filed a complaint with Police Station Phase-III, NOIDA demanding action against the accused.
