NHRC notices to the Secretary, MHA and DGP, Chhattisgarh over media reports of gang rape, assault and loot by security personnel in District Bijapur (22.12.2015)

New Delhi, 22nd December, 2015

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a minor girl, a pregnant woman and several other women were gang raped, assaulted and looted by security personnel in a remote, Maoist dominated, area of District Bijapur, Chhattisgarh. Reportedly, though, an FIR was registered on the 1st November, 2015 against the unknown security personnel, but no arrests were made.

The Commission has observed that the incidents, if true, indicate gross violation of human rights of the victims. Accordingly, notices have been issued to the Union Home Secretary and Director General of Police, Chhattisgarh calling for a detailed report within four weeks.
