NHRC seeks inputs from CP & DM, Hyderabad on rehabilitation of 220 rescued child labourers from bangle factories (27.2.2015)

New Delhi, 27th February, 2015

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that in a search operation, in the recent past, police rescued around 220 child labourers, including girls from bangle making factories in the old city of Hyderabad, Telengana. The children aged between 12 to 16 years were brought from different places in Bihar to work for a pittance. Police has arrested at least 15 persons in this connection.

Child labour is prohibited and amounts to violation of human rights of victim children. Therefore, the Commission has observed the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Commissioner of Police and District Magistrate, Hyderabad, Telengana calling for reports in the matter. It has also asked them to inform about the steps taken for the rehabilitation of the rescued children. They have been given two weeks to respond.
